Choosing people:  he chooses people that have differing personalities so that conflict exists in their relationship

Organizing chapters: alternate between fast moving and slow moving chapters.  For quicker pace, use shorter paragraphs.

Advertising vs Foreshadowing:  Advertising promises a future event, foreshadowing simply hints at it.

FRANZ KAFKA

He wrote great tone-setting and summary opening sentences, like in The Trial, “Someone must have slandered K, for one morning, without having done anything truly wrong, he was arrested.” or “As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a giant insect.”

His stories are the basic “voyage and return” plot where the hero goes to a strange place and where the hero is worrying about the place in the writing.

There are two kinds of “voyage and return” plots.  “Light” is like in Alice and Wonderland, where the hero returns.  “Dark” is like The Trial or Orwell’s 1984, where the hero cannot return and is killed or forever trapped.
